In line with recent studies that indicate Mild
Induced Hypothermia 32°-34° can be beneficial in the treatment of
certain Cardiac Arrest the demand for a portable effective cooling
device was created.
The studies show cooling may be beneficial in
reducing severe neurological impairment following Cerebral Ischaemia
during Cardiac Arrest (N. Eng.J. Med. Vol, 346:549-556 Feb 21 2002 No.
8).
Hypothermia decreases metabolic demand.
Neurotoxic transmitters and extracellular glutamate release decreases;
the inflammatory process is suppressed and cell membrane stabilized.
The success of this new treatment has many
Medical Institutions now looking to introduce a cooling protocol. The
drawback is the cooling devices available are expensive, labor
intensive, often require some type of specialist involvement and
cannot be commenced until a patient is stabilized in Intensive Care.
With all this in mind plus the fact that most
cooling is managed by the nursing staff a practical effective,
inexpensive cooling tool was needed.
An article in a medical publication on how Arctic
Heat body cooling vests assisted Surgeons and Theatre staff was the
starting point for this development.
The article described how doctors and staff were
being knocked about by heat stress. This was due to long theatre
stints operating on victims of the first Bali bomb victims. On the
suggestion of a theatre staff member Arctic Heat body cooling vests
were borrowed from AFL team the Brisbane Lions and worn during these
long operating stints. The cooling vests eliminated the heat stress
problem.

ICU nurse Sue Elder approached Arctic Heat’s
Managing Director Shane Williams after reading this article and
together they developed this highly practical and effective cooling
tool.
The development took 4 years R&D but the end
result is a truly cost efficient, effective cooling kit. The ease of
use has been applauded by all who have experienced the kit. There is
no doubt this is due to the assistance of Nurse Sue Elder whose 35
years experience in ICU was vital in knowing what was practical for
nurses to use in this specialized situation.
The MEDI+COOL cooling kit is made up of a neck to
groin blanket, a cap, two axilla pads and 2 groin pads. All parts are
packed into easy access plastic bags for sanitizing reasons.
Using the revolutionary Arctic Heat IP the
components are initially soaked in water for approximately 10 minutes
to activate the crystal into a gel. Once activated the kit is towel
dried placed into their individual plastic bags and then into the
freezer. The kit will cool off very quickly but when allowed to freeze
for 2 hours will give continuous cooling for about 2 hours.
The hospital kit contains double of everything
which is color coded, one white set and one blue set. This allows
staff to recognize that while one color of the kit is on the patient
cooling, the alternate set is in the freezer ready to go when needed.
Once the set on the patient looses its cooling process the alternate
kit is swapped over taking one staff member a few minutes.
With this rotation, cooling can continue for as
long as desired. It can commence from the time Paramedics arrive at
the scene and continue uninterrupted through all processes.
The Ambulance kit contains one of everything and
is supplied in a small soft portable cooler bag. The kit can be
prepared, frozen placed in the cooler bag needing very little room in
the Ambulance. If the kit is not used it will stay frozen inside the
cooler bag for 8-12 hours.

ADVANTAGES OF THE MEDI+COOL KIT:
- It is efficient and effective.
- Easy to use.
- No mess, dry application.
- Patient and relative friendly
- Cost effective.
- Non Toxic and Latex free.
- No OH&S issues
- Easily transported and stored.
- Has a wide range of uses.
- TGA & CE approved
One of the features of the Arctic Heat technology
is that mechanical devices are not required to cool the products. The
Arctic Heat gel can be cooled by placing the activated product into
cold or ice water.
This allows the MEDI+COOL kit to be used in any
situation. Cooling can commence immediately in the field which is
ideal for rescue situations and treatment of heat stress. Military and
Rescue outfits are well suited to this kit due to its instant
effectiveness and portability.
Other possible uses for the Arctic Heat cooling
kit are Malignant Hyperthermia, all febrile conditions, healed burns
when temperature control is required, lowering of temperature through
fever and mobile hospitals where electrical alternatives are not
possible.
This revolutionary patient cooling kit is
currently being marketed in the UK and Ireland by leading medical
company Laerdal. The kit is currently being used in many of London’s
leading hospitals and with 2 Ambulance trusts, the feedback is very
positive.
The kit is available in Australia directly
through Arctic Heat.
With further studies showing cooling will be the
way of the future in other acute conditions, namely at this stage
Stroke and New Born Hypoxic babies, Arctic Heat MEDI+COOL will lead
the world in effective, portable patient cooling.
